Atlas V - an American rocket with a Russian engine

Atlas V is a heavy class space launch vehicle, developed by Lockheed Martin Corporation at the beginning of the 2000s. It is a member of the renowned family of Atlas rockets, which were among the first created in the USA in the 1950s. At the moment it is manufactured by Lockheed Martin jointly with Boeing as part of the United Launch Alliance (ULA). This rocket is one of the main space carrier vehicles in the US and will soon become one of the carriers of the Boeing CST-100 Starliner manned spacecraft. The main booster of the first stage of Atlas V is the RD-180 engine, provided by the Russian Energomash corporation, which shows a lot of interesting aspects of both international cooperation and political debates.
