The Yayoi Period was a time of growth and advancement. Agriculture and metalworking allowed the Yayoi to thrive and expand across the islands of Japan. Yayoi society became violent and unequal. Farming resulted in power concentrating in an elite minority. These were the people who owned land and crops, mainly rice. A complex class hierarchy formed.
