On August 14, 2024, I captured the breathtaking Awaodori group dance by the Awaodori Promotion Association at the Minaminouchi Stage. This was my first time filming the group dance head-on, and the view was more spectacular than I ever imagined. The group dance takes place from August 12 to 15, during the second session at the Minaminouchi Stage. It’s a grand sight as famous Awaodori groups, part of the Awaodori Promotion Association, come together to perform, making it the highlight of the Tokushima City Awaodori. The dance begins with tall lanterns creating a bridge, followed by the procession of musicians, female dancers, children, and male dancers passing under it. Not all the musicians can fit on stage, so they spread out along the aisles and near the exits, filling the air with the lively rhythm of the dance. The leading female dancers are the stars of each group, and their lineup changes daily throughout the four days of performances. The male dancers showcase each group’s unique style. For instance, Ahou-ren pumps up the crowd by waving their lanterns high with excitement, while Sasa-ren’s low, almost crawling dance brings them so close to the ground that they nearly disappear from view. The dancers’ joyful expressions are contagious, and their passion moves the hearts of everyone watching. Everyone at the Minaminouchi Stage—dancers, musicians, and spectators alike—joins in the shared joy of Awaodori, creating a sense of unity that’s impossible to describe. As the dance procession begins to wind down, I always find myself wishing it could go on forever. It’s in moments like these that I feel the deep connection to this timeless tradition. I hope people worldwide can experience Awaodori and feel that same sense of unity. Awaodori (Awa Dance) is one of the most famous traditional performing arts in Japan, with its history of more than 430 years. “Awa“ is the old feudal administration name for Tokushima Prefecture, and “odori“ means “dance“. Awaodori Festival in Tokushima City is held from August 12 to 15, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year.
