The Raadha Kalpa Dance Company presents: EXPECTATIONS The dance film is centred around the idea of how our lives are twofold in the modern world. The lives we lead and the lives we project to the external world through social media, digital platforms, photographs and emojis. There is an expectation that one must always show what is beautiful and perfect to the people that surround us. Perception takes priority over honesty to a point where life itself may no longer be truthful. One of the leading causes for depression is unrealistic expectations of oneself, fed by digital projections of ideal lives. The piece uses the Bharatanatyam vocabulary to explore a very contemporary subject. The presto from Vivaldi's “The Four Seasons“ reflects the urgency with which we function in our daily urban lives, constantly capturing moments to project to the external world while often forgetting to enjoy the moment. The stress and weight of that desire to be accepted often takes control of ones life.
