In 1975, he won the 9th Chopin Competition, becoming only the third winner from Chopin's native Poland. Even though he was only 18 years old, the youngest participant in the competition at the time, he swept the main prizes of the competition, including the Mazurka Prize and the Polonaise Prize. Afterwards, he gained popularity as a Chopin specialist, performing at music festivals in Prague Spring, Edinburgh, and Salzburg, as well as with top orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra, and is considered one of the world's best pianists. He was ranked 11th in the ranking of the greatest pianists of all time by pianists published in BBC Magazine in 2019. Many say that Chopin's ballads that he played are better than any other performance, and are often mentioned as a textbook of Chopin's music. Performances of Chopin's major pieces, including the Piano Concerto, Scherzo, Mazurka, Ballade, and Polonaise, are indispensable when talking about Chopin recordings. He has great affection for the piano, an instrument, and pursues the highest level of delicacy when playing, so unlike other pianists, he does not use the piano placed at the concert hall, but takes his own Steinway on the plane.
