Walt Disney Imagineering has created autonomous robot stunt doubles. Stuntronics are simply stunt-double animatronics. Combining advanced robotic technology with the exploration of untethered dynamic movement, each Stuntronic uses onboard sensing to perform various combinations of flips, twists, and poses with repeatability and precision. The project to explore stunt-double animatronics started by attempting to control the landing of a figure we launched from a window. Meanwhile, scientists at Disney Research were working hard on using the conservation of angular momentum to achieve extremely precise aerial motion control. A collaboration between the two efforts (and a lot of hard work iterating) allowed the team to create the Stuntronics Platform: ready to bring a wide range of dynamic characters from our films to life.
