Which historical weapons require the least skill to use

If someone with little or no prior training in martial arts had to pick a weapon for a historical duel setting, which would be easiest to wield and give them the best chance? In my opinion a spear or a shield plus mace would be excellent choices, as they are forgiving in terms of technique and offer significant advantages to compensate for lack of experience.
