Powerful Typhoon Khanun hit Okinawa in southwestern Japan on Wednesday. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning of strong winds and storm surges. The typhoon is moving west at a speed of 15 kilometers per hour. The wind speed is 170 kilometers per hour near the center of the typhoon, with gusts up to 230 kilometers per hour. The storm damaged several houses and forced traffic to stop and shops to close. Many hospitals only accepted emergency patients. Meanwhile, evacuation centers were set up in Okinawa. The hurricane also left almost 200,000 homes without power. Khanun, the sixth typhoon this year, has caused disruption to traffic. Hundreds of domestic and international flights to and from Naha Airport have been cancelled. Public transport, including buses and ferries connecting the region's islands, has been suspended.
