This is a new instalment in the Playlist: Issues of Contemporary Politics. Here I discuss primarily the post-Soviet trends in the development of the Baltic republics. Behind the facade of prosperity and democracy is hidden discrimination of large ethnic Russian minorities, ban of Russian language schools, but most disturbing for the future of these countries is the catastrophic demographic trends which are on track to lead to halving the population by 2050. What decicions and policies were chosen that may explain this? And finally, is hostility to Russia truly in the national interest of these countries? was born in Leningrad USSR, and as a 20 year old came to the United States. He got his PhD from Princeton and served as a Associate Professor of Soviet History at Harvard University.
