Pentti Linkola is a radical environmentalist, a famous dissident ecophilosopher, and a fisherman in Finland. Linkola has written and lectured widely about his ideas for five decades and is highly respected in his home country. He lives materially simple life. He still fishes in winter time on Lake Vanajavesi. Linkola blames humans for the continuous degradation of the environment. He promotes an eventual decline in human population in order to combat problems commonly attributed to overpopulation. He strongly promotes deindustrialization and opposes democracy for being the agent of wasteful capitalism and consumerism. He regards the proponents of economic growth to be dogmatic and ignorant of the subtle destructive effects of free market policy over the past two centuries.
