The two metals have similar chemical properties, which makes them difficult to separate, and the properties of each metal are heavily influenced by the other impurity. Hafnium can be used to control the recrystallization of tungsten wires, but because of its ability to absorb neutrons, its main application is as a control rod material in nuclear reactors.
