How an old-style Honeywell thermostat works. The two main parts are a bi-metal coil spring and a glass bulb containing a bubble of liquid mercury. Liquid mercury is a highly conductive metal that was used for many years in numerous types of switches. It has since been outlawed for such uses due to it's toxic nature when ingested into the human body.
