Black Butterfly is a 1968 Hong Kong wuxia film directed by Lo Wei. The film was produced by Runme Shaw for Shaw Brothers and is based on the screenplay by I. Fang Yeh. Kwan Bao Zhu is the daughter of retired swordsman Kwan Yee. She is also the ’Black Butterfly’, a highly-skilled cat burglar who steals from the rich and distributes her loot to the poor. The Black Butterfly also leaves behind a black butterfly emblem at every crime scene. The local magistrate has tried to catch her several times, but has thus far failed. Soon, the Black Butterfly lands herself in big trouble by stealing valuable treasure from a local gang, the Five Devils. They search for her and threaten to kill everyone in town unless they get back their stolen valuables. Black Butterfly was filmed on 35mm color film with a mono audio soundtrack featuring Mandarin dialogue. The Shawscope cinematographic process was used in production and the film’s total runtime is 105 minutes. Black Butterfly premiered on 5 March 1968.
