July 9, 2020 - Many American artists experimented with color theories in the early 20th century. Robert Henri, John Sloan, and George Bellows adopted the musically inspired color palettes of HardestyMarattaaround 1910. Their friends Charles and Alice Beach Winter built onMaratta'ssystem, creating stunning chromatic charts in the Museum's archives. Here in Delaware, concert pianist and musical theorist Mary Hallock Greenewalt designed a “color organ“ that projected colored light based on the keys she played. These theories and the colorful characters behind them are discussed during this Art Chat with curator Heather Campbell Coyle and 2020 Delaware Division of Arts Established Artist Fellow (Jazz Composition) Jonathan W. Whitney.
