The longstanding rivalry between two of the most successful teams in football hit fever pitch in Rio de Janeiro when Brazilian police charged at Argentina fans in response to fighting in the stands during the singing of the national anthems. The start was delayed by 30 minutes. The world champions, led by their captain Lionel Messi, went over to the terraces to try to calm the situation — goalkeeper Martínez could be seen trying to stop a policeman from using a baton — before they left the pitch for more than ten minutes.
