From the time of the Norman Conquest, it has been a cardinal principle of English law that nobody may be tried twice for the same offence. This ancient rule was casually disposed of as a result of the Macpherson enquiry into the case of Stephen Lawrence’s murder. Immigration has brought about other awful changes in our legal system as well.
