Two men have been charged after a female police officer was overpowered while attempting an arrest on Australia’s Gold Coast. The officer had responded to reports of two men sleeping in a damaged vehicle, a vehicle which had earlier been reported as suspicious, and allegedly contained firearms. Video footage captured the female officer instructing one of the men to exit the vehicle, pointing a taser at him. Evidently not particularly afraid, the man instead reached for a firearm, according to the female officer’s report. The female officer tased the man and attempted to cuff him, however he not only managed to shrug off the taser, he also managed to ‘rugby tackle’ the officer to the ground and bang her head against the pavement. The officer can be heard screaming as he then administers a beating which left her hospitalized with head and upper body injuries, before losing interest and running off. Both men in the vehicle, aged 40 and 36, were eventually caught by the officer’s male colleagues and were charged with assault, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and weapons offenses. The female officer is in stable condition, and an investigation is ongoing.
