The Wiener Staatsoper's 2023-24 season features premieres, revivals, and concerts. Highlights include: “Il Trittico“ premieres with Tatjana Gürbaca's production, featuring Carlos Álvarez, Anja Kampe, and more. Philippe Jordan conducts. (Oct. 4, 2023 – Feb 24, 2024) Ligeti’s “Le Grand Macabre” stars Georg Nigl, Sarah Aristidou, Xavier Sabata, and others. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts. (Nov. 11 – 23, 2023) “Turandot“ gets a new production by Claus Guth with Asmik Grigorian and Jonas Kaufmann. Franz Welser-Möst conducts. (Dec. 7, 2023 – June 10, 2024) “Animal Farm“ conducted by Alexander Soddy with a cast including Gennady Bezzubenkov and others. (Feb. 28 – March 10, 2024) “Lohengrin“ directed by Jossi Wieler and Sergio Marbito with Christian Thielemann conducting. (April 29 – May 11, 2024) Barrie Kosky conducts “Così fan tutte“ with a cast led by Federica Lombardi and others. (June 16 – 28, 2024) The season also includes numerous revivals and performances of classic operas: for example: Sebastian Wiegle conducts Strauss’ “Daphne” with Günther Groissböck, Noa Beinart, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Daniel Jenz, and David Butt Philip. Performance Dates: Sept. 12-21, 2023 Andreas Schager, Günther Groissböck, Anja Kampe, Iain Paterson, Martin Häßler, and Tanja Ariane Baumgartner perform Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde.” Philippe Jordan conducts. Lisette Oropesa, Juan Diego Flórez, and Ludovic Tézier lead Verdi’s “La Traviata” in Simon Stone’s production. Antonello Manacorda conducts. Performance Dates: Oct. 1-12, 2023 Three casts headline Puccini’s “Tosca.” In the fall Angel Blue, Vittorio Grigolo, and Ludovic Tézier star in the masterwork and in the winter Elena Stikhina, Piotr Beczala, and Erwin Schrot take on the iconic roles. Finally in the spring Krassimira Stoyanova, Riccardo Massì, and Amartuvshin Enkhbat headline. Performance Dates: Oct. 5, 2023-April 26, 2024 Christian Thielemann leads Strauss’ “Die Frau Ohne Schatten” with Andreas Schager, Elza van den Heever, Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Clemens Unterreiner, Michael Volle, and Elena Pankratova. Performance Dates: Oct. 14-24, 2023 Jonas Kaufmann leads teh first cast of Verdi’s “Otello” alongside Ludovic Tézier, Iván Ayón Rivas, and Rachel Willis-Sørensen. Alexander Soddy conducts. The second cast is set to star Andreas Schager, Igor Golovatenko, Alessandro Liberatore, and Nicole Car. Giampaolo Bisanti conducts the second cast. Performance Dates: Oct. 25, 2023-May 20, 2024 Anna Netrebko headlines Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” with Davide Luciano, Yusif Eyvazov, and Evgeny Solodovnikov. Jader Bignamini conducts. Performance Dates: Oct. 29-Nov. 8, 2023 Michael Nagy, Günther Groissböck, Wolfgang Bankl, Daniel Frank, Werner Van Mechelen, Elīna Garanča, and Nikolay Sidorenko lead Wagner’s “Parsifal.” Alexander Soddy conducts. Performance Dates: March 28-April 3, 2024 Georg Zeppenfeld, Günther Groissböck, Wolfgang Koch, Martin Häßler, David Butt Philip, Michael Laurenz, Hanna-Elisabeth Müller, Christina Bock star in Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.” Philippe Jordan conducts. Performance Dates: May 19-30, 2024 Piotr Beczala stars in Gounod’s “Faust” alongside Nicole Car, Adam Palka, and Stefan Astakhov. Bertrand de Billy conducts. Performance Dates: May 22-June 2, 2024 Gerhard Siegel, Michaela Schuster, Camilla Nylund, Iain Paterson, Daniel Jenz, and Patricia Nolz lead Strauss’ “Salome” with Philippe Jordan conducting. Performance Dates: June 5-17, 2024 Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Ivan Magrì, Ildar Abdrazakov, Anna Pirozzi, and Szilvia Vörös star in Verdi’s “Nabucco.”Giampaolo Bisanti conducts. Performance Dates: June 8-18, 2024 Luca Salsi takes on the title role of Verdi’s “Falstaff.” The cast also includes Boris Pinkhasovich, Hiroshi Amako, Roberta Mantegna, Slávka Zámečníková, Monika Bohinec, and Isabel Signoret. Thomas Guggeis conducts. Performance Dates: June 21-30, 2024 Barocchissmo Handel’s “Giulio Cesare” will star Cecilai Bartoli, Carlo Vistoli, Sara Mingardo, Max Emanuel Cencic, Kangmin Justin Kim, and Peter Kalman.
