This week, Maurizio Cattelan presented Comedian at Art Basel in Miami Beach. Comedian is a duct-taped banana and it’s priced at 120,000$. David Datuna, another artist, decided to eat Cattelan’s artwork in an art performance he called “Hungry Artist”. Can a banana really be worth 120,000$? What does it mean? Why did Datuna eat it? To answer these questions, we take a look at Marcel Duchamps’ Fountain and at other artistic performances directed at the 1917 ready-made. The story and concept behind both artworks are very similar.
