A brief cinematographic report on the string puppets of Rajasthan Many times metaphor is the source of Mani Kaul’s images. In his first documentary, Nomad Puppeteers (1974), he has a number of shots of these puppeteers in a bus. The movement of the bus rocks their bodies in the manner of the puppets they animate. Tossed around in the turbulence of modern India, his puppeteers are themselves moved by unseen forces. Mani does not force his metaphors on us. He merely takes us to a point where the common denominator with the other phenomenon that gives rise to a metaphor becomes physical.
