One of the most shocking events in English History was carried out on a cold January morning in 1649 when Charles I made his way onto the scaffold to face the executioner in London. The King had lost the English Civil War and had been sentenced to death as a traitor against his own people by Oliver Cromwell and his Parliamentarians. His death warrant was signed and days after his trial he was told to prepare for his death. It was the only time in England that an absolute monarch had been executed, and outside the Banqueting House the crowds were huge to witness the killing of the King. In one swift blow from the axe, a mysterious executioner took the head clean off of Charles I. Still today many debate the legality of the execution of Charles I, and some consider that the King was actually a martyr. They could not find an executioner in England who would perform the job of killing the King, and because of this it's believed the common hangman was used. But today Charles I's execution is considered one of the most brutal events in History, with Charles Stuart being executed by axe.
