When the commerce boom started in the 15th century, ships were the most important transport, since it was the only way to go trans-Atlantic, discover new territories, and deliver goods. But despite the importance of this transport, vessels weren't safe at all. Without GPS, radio, and other hi-tech devices, navigating ships was dangerous, especially at night. Lighthouses already existed at that time for thousands of years, but they weren't that helpful. Besides the similar look, they weren't as we know them now. But in 1823, everything changed.
