At room temperature, elemental iodine is a black-bluish solid. When heated, solid iodine sublimates and enters the gas phase. Iodine got its name from the Greek word ‘ἰοειδής’, meaning ‘purple’. Indeed, iodine vapor has a beautiful purple color. Regaining solid iodine from iodine vapor can be achieved by cooling down iodine vapor on a cold surface. Beautiful iodine crystals are formed. Hazards: - Iodine is toxic
