Japan: Protesters rally against Paralympics during closing ceremony

Activists protesting the fact that Japan held Olympics and Paralympics amid a COVID-19 surge gathered outside the Olympic stadium in Tokyo on Sunday as the Paralympic games came to a close. Protesters insist the games should be called off due to the current COVID-19 wave. On Saturday the country recorded its highest ever number of seriously ill patients requiring the use of ventilators, at 2,223. The previous record was set just the day before. “We have been opposed to the Olympics since before it started,” stated protester Ayako Yoshida. “Other cities have been chosen one after another, and we don't want the tragedy that has been happening in Tokyo for the past eight years to be repeated in any of them,” she went on to say. The protest also comes just days after prime minister Yoshihide Suga announced he will not run for re-election as leader of the party later this month, ending his year long tenure in the office of prime minister.
