Would you like to see a video that can bewitch any sailor? Well, look at this! In broad daylight, when visibility is perfect, in a protected harbor, with no wind, no waves, and no current – i.e. under perfect conditions – a minehunter, moving slowly and stately astern, unfailingly collides with the portside of another minehunter berthed alongside. Now pay attention to the following details in the video: - The first minehunter’s navigation radar is rotating and, perhaps, even transmitting signal. However, at such a short distance, it is useless. - When the video starts, the distance between the two ships is approximately half the length of the first ship. Considering how she steadily moves towards the “target”, she likely started her maneuver well before the collision. - Look at the water splashes coming from the first ship’s aft: even after the collision, her engine keeps working astern for at least twenty seconds. - There are people on the deck of the first ship, but no one reports the danger to the bridge. So, when moving in the harbor, the command didn’t assign proper lookouts. All they had to do was to position lookouts on the forecastle, the quarterdeck, and the ship’s sides, give each of them a walkie-talkie to report to the bridge – and safety would have been guaranteed. But in fact, even those on the bridge took some time after the collision to realise what happened and stop the engine. Conclusion: the Commanding Officer, the Executive Office, and the Officer of the Watch demonstrate total incompetence. The others, if they’re lucky, can get away with “misbehavior” in their personal records. Do you know what these ships are? The first one is HMS Chiddingfold, and the second one is HMS Bangor. The incident took place on 19 January in Bahrain. Right, the Royal Navy has “distinguished itself” once again. Indeed, it has been very “lucky” as of late.
