The English village is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as “Sciptone“, and it was held by the Norman lord Miles Crispin. The village developed further during the medieval period. It was part of the Wychwood Forest, which was a royal hunting forest. Throughout its history, the village's economy was primarily based on agriculture, with farming being the main occupation for the residents. The English village is home to the historic Church of St. Mary the Virgin, which dates back to the 12th century. The church has undergone various alterations and additions over the centuries. Wychwood Forest: The village's proximity to Wychwood Forest played a significant role in its history. The forest provided resources and hunting grounds for the local population. In more recent times, Shipton-under-Wychwood has evolved into a residential village, with a mix of historic and newer buildings. The English village has a close-knit community and hosts various events and activities throughout the year, contributing to its cultural heritage. The village had a railway station on the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway, which opened in the mid-19th century.
