A very early work by Bach – recorded here for All of Bach with Emmanuel Frankenberg – about which not much is known. What we do know: the sonata is a style exercise in the Italian sonata form - Italian music was booming around 1700. Furthermore interesting is that Bach in this sonata goes easy on the rules of counterpoint - which he normally held sacred - and that much of what is heard here returns in the preludes of the Wohltemperierte Clavier.
