The Hammer is Phil Taylor’s track. A tribute to his off kilter double bass drum style. Fast Eddie recalls Lemmy used to shout at Phil in rehearsal - Can’t you just play a straight fucking 4/4 for once……. Phil of course never would. This is what made him virtually unique in drumming terms, no straight beats for Phil and guys like Keith Moon. Phil’s background was jazz which gave him the freedom to create the epic soundscapes behind the driving rhythm of Lemmy’s bass. Those who saw them in concert during those days will remember the bottom end filled with the frenzied double bass assault of Animal Taylor, it was like being punched in the chest every time he kicked those bass drums such was the sheer volume of the PA.
