Cold Dew, the seventeenth solar term in the twenty-four solar terms, falls in mid-September (October 7th or 8th in the Gregorian calendar), when the Dipper points to Xin, marking the moment when the sun reaches 195° of the Yellow River. According to the ’Collection and Explanation of the Seventy-Two Hou of the Monthly Ordinances’, it states: ’In the ninth month, the dew is cold, almost congealing.’ At this time, the temperature is lower than during ’White Dew’, with more dew on the ground. The previously clear and sparkling dew on the ground is about to freeze into frost, intensifying the cold, hence the name. Cold Dew also heralds the arrival of deep autumn, transitioning from cool to cold, with the possibility of snowfall.
