In London recently, a branch of Waterstones bookshops was accused, by implication, of racism against the author Derek Owusu. There was no foundation at all for such an idea, but it serves to show how the illusion of racism can be conjured up from thin air. It shows too, how a difference in cultural outlook can cause the simplest interaction to be perceived in the wrong way. This single incident is indicative of a very modern trend, which is to seek out racism where none exists and to try to portray Britain as being gripped by systemic racism.
