South Africa’s energy crisis is fueling a boom in consumer solar panels. Their capacity has increased by 453% in just two years. According to Eskom, the state-owned energy monopoly, residential rooftop solar panels in South Africa “grew” by 2.6 GW in 2023. And over the past two years, their capacity has increased more than fivefold. South Africa is projected to become the world’s tenth largest market for consumer photovoltaic systems in 2024.
