Filmed live in King's College Chapel, for broadcast at Easter 2021, this is William Byrd's ( - 1623) setting of words from Psalm 81, 'Sing Joyfully'. It is one of his most lively, vibrant and complex motets, interspersing dense polyphonic textures with moments of striking homophony. This piece is also perhaps the best example of Byrd's fusion of madrigalian musical style with sacred liturgical context. Sing joyfully to God our strength; sing loud unto the God of Jacob! Take the song, bring forth the timbrel, the pleasant harp, and the viol. Blow the trumpet in the new moon, even in the time appointed, and at our feast day. For this is a statute for Israel, and a law of the God of Jacob.
