It premiered in 1963 in Tel Aviv. During the following fourteen years, Bernstein modified the work repeatedly until its final version performed in 1977. The work is divided into seven sections united in three movements, based on an aspect of Judaism: the Kaddish, which means sanctification, a prayer recited in the synagogues' religious services and in the dialogue between man and God.
