The composition “Anitra's Dance“ from the suite by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg to the drama “Peer Gynt“ by the Norwegian writer Henrik Ibsen. Initially, the suite contained 26 pieces (Op. 23, 1875), later E. Grieg included several compositions in two other suites: Suite No. 1, Op. 46 (1888) and Suite No. 2, Op. 55 (1893). “Anitra's Dance“ is the third piece in the first suite. According to the plot of the play, Peer Gynt, trying to find his place in life, goes on a journey. So, during one of his adventures, he finds himself in the Sahara, where he, dressed in Arab clothes he found along the way, is mistaken for a prophet. The adventurer is interested in the daughter of the leader of the local Bedouin tribe, Anitra, and, taking the opportunity, tries to charm and seduce her. But the girl manages to deceive him. With her dance, she dulls the attention of the impudent traveller, steals his money and jewelry and runs away. Peer Gynt without a penny in his pocket sets off to wander further - to Egypt. And at home, faithful Solveig has been waiting for him all these years...
