I found it the easiest to stick to the left side of the screen, without moving horizontally at all. There's usually always a gap for you to move through, and this way it's easier to focus on dodging the bullets on one axis without worrying too much about your position or getting stuck in the middle of a mess. Just try to hang around the center so that you could move both up and down depending on the situation, especially during the boss
