Lasers, silicone, and concrete oh my!! We love making things that serve multiple purposes and had this idea to make a candle holder that works for tapered candles and tealights. We used a stereolithography (SLA) 3d printer (the Peopoly Moai) to make a master model. SLA has the advantage over fused filament fabrication (FFF/FDM) because it has a smoother and more accurate surface finish. We sealed the SLA print because it can interfere with the silicone curing process by spraying some clear acrylic spray paint. We then applied mold release to prep for the silicone pour! We first tried platinum cure silicone but it was too finicky so we switched to tin cure silicone. We talked with Quikrete about what concrete mix to use and they recommended we use non-shrink precision grout. The main things we liked about this mix is that it was really fine (so it could capture tiny details), it hardened pretty fast, and its final strength is really impressive.
