Hasan Bitmez, MP for Turkish party Felicity delivered a fiery and impassioned speech condemning Israel, as is customary for the Turkish parliament, but the video ended up going viral for entirely different reasons. Bitmez criticized Israel’s heavy-handed response to Hamas by reciting a poem by Turkish writer Sezai Karakoc: ‘Even if history remains silent, the truth will not remain silent. They think that if they get rid of us, there will be no problem. However, if you get rid of us, you will not be able to escape the torment of conscience.’ The poem concluded with a fateful line: ‘Even if you escape the torment of history, you will not be able to escape the wrath of Allah.’ Then, with god-tier ironic timing, Bitmez suffered a massive heart attack and collapsed right there and then at the podium. He was rushed to hospital, and is said to be in an ‘extremely critical and serious’ condition.
