Haiti’s main international airport was the scene of a fierce firefight on Monday, with armed gangs attempting to seize control of the site in the wake of Sunday’s massive jailbreak. The Toussaint Louverture International Airport was closed at the time of the attack, but dozens of airport staff can be seen fleeing from the gunfire. Authorities in Haiti have declared a state of emergency and nighttime curfew after armed gangs stormed two of the country’s biggest jails, leading to thousands of prisoners escaping. Following the jailbreak, the capital, Port-au-Prince, has been plunged into violence between gang members and police, with gang leaders calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. In response, the government has called on police to use ‘all legal means at their disposal’ to restore order.
