In this episode of 'Listening in', I look at the meaning of György Ligeti's music (Atmosphères, Kyrie, Lux Aeterna, Aventures) in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, and how this music gives us information about the alien species that seems to be controlling the evolution of humankind throughout the film. I also consider how certain techniques in Ligeti's music, like micropolyphony, reinforce the mystery surrounding the events in the film.
