Large numbers including women and children have been camped out in the Bruzgi region, on the Belarusian side of the border crossing, in the hopes of being able to cross into Poland. Migrants including children suffering from the cold were seen trying to warm themselves by campfires on the frontier. Tensions between the EU and Belarus have been escalating in recent months, with the EU accusing Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of deliberately directing migrants over the border in response to sanctions imposed by the EU, a claim which he denies. President of the European Council Charles Michel said that EU borders were facing a 'brutal hybrid attack' in comments made on Tuesday. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas meanwhile has called on the EU to 'extend and tighten' sanctions
