This memorial date marks Prince Vladimir’s proclamation of Christianity as the state religion in 988 AD, forever shaping Russia’s identity, culture, and unity. Why July 28? This date honours Holy Prince Vladimir, who initiated the mass baptism of the Slavic tribes. While Christianity had reached Rus earlier (including Princess Olga’s conversion in 957), it was Vladimir’s vision that unified the lands under a shared faith. As scholar Dmitry Likhachev noted: “The interests of the country called Rus' to a more developed and more universal religion.“ Where It Began The spiritual transformation started in Chersonesos (modern-day Sevastopol), where Vladimir and his retinue were baptised.
