Declan McKenna - Elevator Hum. An exclusive performance for Vevo. It was clear from the jump the Declan McKenna likes to color outside the lines. As wildly catchy as his breakout hit “Brazil” was, it was also an equally eccentric protest song (a takedown of FIFA’s corruption in Brazil) paired with reversed guitars and a psychedelic video. In 2016, almost a year after Mr. M won Glastonbury Festival’s emerging talent competition, “Brazil” hit number 1 on Alt Nation. With fame came a bigger microphone, which the Enfield-born lad used for righteous musings on transgender equality (2017’s “Paracetamol”) and England’s relationship to imperialism, war, and weapons trading (2019’s “British Bombs.“) The pandemic caused a delayed release for 2020's sophomore effort ‘Zeros.' So it makes sense this past summer he dubbed a massive string of shows The Big Return Tour. On his new ‘What Happened To The Beach?’ album, McKenna has decided to “drop the intensity” of his message music and “have some fun.” If these performances of “Mulholland’s Dinner and Wine” and “Elevator Hum” are any indication, it’s mission accomplished.
