The Republic of San Marco, or the Second Venetian Republic, is a state that existed in the north of the Apennine Peninsula during the Second War of Italian Independence. The government of the Austrian Empire sent an army led by the famous commander Joseph Radetzky to suppress the uprising. Having defeated the rebels and their Sardinian allies in Northern Italy, Radetzky laid siege to Venice. In 1849, against the backdrop of hunger and disease in the besieged city, the head of the Republic of San Marco, D. Manin, signed a capitulation and, together with his immediate circle, fled to France. The anthem of the Republic of San Marco was the oratorio “Judith Triumphant” by Antonio Vivaldi, which in the past played the role of the anthem of the Venetian Republic.
