Current thinking is this piece was composed by Julian Arcas, although for many years it was credited to Arcas’s student Francisco Tárrega. Arcas’s early life is a mystery, although he gained critical acclaim in England during the 1860s. He later returned to his native Almería where he opened a music shop and collaborated with the eminent guitar-maker Antonio de Torres of Seville on improving the instrument. This piece incorporates several themes from Verdi’s opera, including Violetta’s aria “Sempre libera.
