I cheated: Just a little bit. Had I followed the objectives of this series strictly, this would be a video about the Chess concept album only. The songs performed later as part of the original West End production (and later recorded by the Danish tour cast in 2001), would have appeared wedged into the next video, between the two Gemini albums. I hope you can understand how that would have been a bit awkward, and it was a tough decision: chronological accuracy, or thematic consistency. Some rambling: The thing about Chess is, everybody does it differently. To paraphrase the song “The Story of Chess“; each production of Chess means there's one less variation left to be played. This video is no different, however I've tried to keep the sequence as close to the Concept album as I can without the narrative falling apart. I considered bringing in the Broadway additions but it doesn't fit to make a coherent story. Stupid Broadway. You'll get them later. More rambling - Selecting songs: Being a musical, there are many reused themes, particularly for characters and moods. From the Chronology's perspective, it's not clear what counts as a repeat. So I've done the only thing I can do: make some guidelines, and then break them when I feel like it. Please disagree and comment; I cannot fit my entire rant in the description! Did you notice? There are 33 squares in the notation area, just like there are 33 squares on the Chess logo. If you know why there's one more white square on the Chess logo than on a chess board, let me know. I found a closely matching font to the Chess logo for the “T H E“ and “M U S I C A L“ in the title card. That and the in-video title of “The Andersson-Rice-Ulvaeus Musical“ are a special deviation from the standard Andersson-Ulvaeus Chronology titles. I've put the photo of Tim and Elaine to the lyrics “'yes I love you both'“ in reference to their affair. lolz The Andersson-Ulvaeus Chronology | Part 6 | 1984-1986 | CHESS Video order: [145] Merano [146] Freddie's Entrance [180] Commie Newspapers [181] Press Conference [147] The Russian And Molokov [148] Where I Want To Be [149] The Arbiter [150] Diplomats [151] Merchandisers [152] Hymn To Chess [182] Fanfare [156] Chess [153] Quartet (A Model Of Decorum And Tranquillity) [183] Florence And Molokov [154] The American And Florence [155] Nobody's Side [184] Der kleine Franz [157] Mountain Duet [158] Florence Quits [159] Embassy Lament [160] Anthem [161] Bangkok [162] One Night In Bangkok [185] One More Opponent [163] Heaven Help My Heart [186] The Soviet Machine [187] The Interview [164] Argument [165] I Know Him So Well [166] The Deal (No Deal) [167] Pity The Child [188] Talking Chess [168] Capablanca [169] World Champions [170] Endgame [189] Finale [171] You And I [172] The Story Of Chess Chronology index: Chess Concept Album, 1984 featuring: Murray Head, Elaine Paige, Tommy Körberg, Denis Quilley, Björn Skifs, Barbara Dickson, Anders Glenmark [145] Merano [146] Freddie's Entrance [147] The Russian And Molokov [148] Where I Want To Be [149] The Arbiter [150] Diplomats [151] Merchandisers [152] Hymn To Chess [153] Quartet (A Model Of Decorum And Tranquillity) [154] The American And Florence [155] Nobody's Side [156] Chess [157] Mountain Duet [158] Florence Quits [159] Embassy Lament [160] Anthem [161] Bangkok [162] One Night In Bangkok [163] Heaven Help My Heart [164] Argument [165] I Know Him So Well [166] The Deal (No Deal) [167] Pity The Child; A Taste Of Pity {same melody and character} [168] Capablanca [169] World Champions [170] Endgame [171] You And I [172] The Story Of Chess West End original version, 1986; recorded by the Danish touring cast, 2001 featuring: Zubin Varla, Emma Kershaw, Simon Clark, Stig Rossen, James Graeme [180] Commie Newspapers [181] Press Conference; Anatoly and the Press {same melody, tone, and situation} [182] Fanfare [183] Florence And Molokov [184] Der kleine Franz [185] One More Opponent [186] The Soviet Machine [187] The Interview [188] Talking Chess [189] Finale
