Freikorps (German for “free corps“; pronounced /ˈfʁaɪˌkoːɐ̯/) was the designation originally applied to volunteer armies formed in small German states between the 17th and 18th centuries. Originally it was a body of irregular soldiers, but after the First World War this name was given to the improvised troops made up of German Reichsheer veterans. These organizations of the interwar period of the 20th century were characterized by their strong nationalist character and their anti-communism; during the Weimar Republic they collaborated with the government in the repression of communist rebelions, highlighting events such as the Spartacist Uprising or the Ruhr uprising, as well as participating in the failed Kapp coup against the young republic.
