It is the first of three quartets dedicated to Prince Andrei Razumovsky, after whom it is named. This quartet was written during the very fertile year of 1806, which also saw the composition of the two other quartets of the same opus (No. 8 and No. 9); the Fourth Piano Concerto; the Fourth Symphony; and the Violin Concerto. It was composed very quickly and premiered by the Schuppanzigh quartet the following year.
