France has warned Russia that NATO would be prepared to defend the sovereignty of Ukraine, where it is alleged Moscow has been staging a troop build-up. It comes as Western leaders attempt to tackle an escalating migrant crisis on the eastern borders of the European Union (EU). The EU has agreed to step up sanctions against Belarus who is accused of pushing migrants towards its Polish and Lithuanian borders to undermine security, a charge it denies.
