17 YEARS AGO: The “Five Day War“ Began () On the night of August 7-8, 2008, a pivotal military conflict erupted involving Georgia, Russia, Abkhazia, and South Ossetia. Known as the “Five Day War“ or “ War,“ it began with Georgian forces shelling Tskhinvali, South Ossetia's capital. Russia subsequently intervened, deploying troops. Within days, the conflict ended: Russian Victory: Moscow secured its objectives.
