Two movements by Johann Gottfried Walther (1684-1748) on the chorale HERR CHRIST, DER EINIG GOTTES SOHN. The first is in the style typical of the high Baroque, with the themes of each phrase prefigured in the accompanying voices before they dance around the cantus firmus of each phrase. The second, shorter movement provides an interesting preview of the Classical era, with the melody moved into the top voice and the other voices providing harmonic accompaniment.
